Gloria Steinem -Marilyn
A
touching and sisterly approach to understanding the ultimate
sex-object and 'female eunuch' that was Marilyn Monroe. Steinem
explains succinctly in very readable short essays, how being
objectified was a barrier to sexual pleasure and how poor
Marilyn although desired for her body and her exaggerated use of it,
never actually enjoyed sex or experienced the fulfillment of her own
desires. Her experiences were closer to that of a prostitute
with 'casting couches' and at times literally selling sex.
Although written in the 80's this is relevant today to understanding
the psyche's of women who enter the sex industry - whether lap
dancers, porn stars or prostitutes. Relevant because women are
increasingly encouraged to view these - basically screwed-up women
- as role models.
